CHICAGO and LAGUNA HILLS, Calif. – The American Association of Endodontists (AAE) announced it has entered a two-year partnership with Sonendo, Inc., a leading dental technology company and developer of the GentleWave® System, to sponsor its annual “Save Your Tooth Month.”
Occurring each May, Save Your Tooth Month celebrates root canals, an important tooth-saving procedure, and the endodontists who perform them. While general dentists can also perform root canals, endodontists spend at least two extra years in training focused solely on endodontic procedures and often have specialized equipment.
When undergoing a root canal or other endodontic treatment, the inflamed or infected pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned and disinfected, then filled and sealed. Afterwards, the tooth is restored with a crown or filling for protection and will continue to function like any other tooth.
The AAE is dedicated to the highest standards of excellence in endodontic care. The Association supports members’ pursuit of excellence through Research and Education, Leadership and Advocacy, and Philanthropy and Service. The organization will mark its 80th anniversary in 2023!
According to the AAE’s recent public survey, 87 percent of Americans wish they had taken better care of their teeth. Three in four Americans are committed to doing everything they can to preserve their natural teeth – even though more than half are not going to the dentist every six months as recommended.
Even though 74 percent of respondents said they notice someone’s teeth either at first sight or within a few minutes of meeting someone new, oral health care is more than just vanity; it impacts overall health. While the majority of Americans realize gum disease and oral cancer may be tied to poor oral health, 80 percent did not identify strokes and 77 percent didn’t identify heart attacks as possibly linked to poor oral care. But the reality is, poor oral health can impact overall health. Therefore, a healthier mouth = a healthier YOU.
What’s more, missing teeth can cause other teeth to shift, affect one’s ability to properly chew and lead to more problems down the road — and a lot more cost. Tooth extraction often is more painful than the infection itself, and replacing an extracted tooth with an artificial one requires additional dental visits that can quickly add up. And so, our key message is clear: Natural teeth are Worth Saving!
The AAE will focus on emphasizing this message as we celebrate Save Your Tooth Month in 2023. Sonendo has sponsored the annual observance since 2020, and together both organizations look forward to joining forces again to broadcast this critically important statement.
Sonendo’s mission is saving teeth, improving lives. Its GentleWave Procedure offers a minimally invasive process that preserves tooth structure and promotes fast healing. The company recently announced the release of its GentleWave G4 System, the next generation of its innovative technology platform. Designed for an optimized doctor and patient experience with a simplified workflow, the G4 System delivers an enhanced level of clean that is only available with GentleWave Technology. To date, more than one million patients have been treated with the GentleWave Procedure.
“We are delighted to again demonstrate our support for the specialty of endodontics and the AAE,” said Bjarne Bergheim, president and CEO of Sonendo. “Both organizations are committed to elevating root canal therapy and helping as many patients as possible save their natural teeth through seamless treatment. We are proud to continue to support the AAE and Save Your Tooth Month.”
Save Your Tooth Month 2023 promises to be the Association’s biggest yet, filled with TV appearances, social media “endofluencer” campaigns, surprise giveaways and even a special live event in Chicago coinciding with AAE23’s location in the Association’s home city.
“Save Your Tooth Month is becoming too big to be contained in a single month,” said AAE Executive Director Ken Widelka. “It is evolving into an evergreen, ever-present movement that values saving natural teeth and is embedded into our daily lives. We are so pleased to see this campaign grow each year, and we are looking forward to taking it to new heights over the next two years, boosted by this valuable partnership with Sonendo.”

About Sonendo
Sonendo is a commercial-stage medical technology company focused on saving teeth from tooth decay, the most prevalent chronic disease globally. Sonendo develops and manufactures the GentleWave® System, an innovative technology platform designed to treat tooth decay by cleaning and disinfecting the microscopic spaces within teeth without the need to remove tooth structure. The system utilizes a proprietary mechanism of action, which combines procedure fluid optimization, broad-spectrum acoustic energy and advanced fluid dynamics, to debride and disinfect deep regions of the complex root canal system in a less invasive procedure that preserves tooth structure. The clinical benefits of the GentleWave System when compared to conventional methods of root canal therapy include improved clinical outcomes, such as superior cleaning that is independent of root canal complexity and tooth anatomy, high and rapid rates of healing and minimal to no post-operative pain. In addition, the GentleWave System can improve the workflow and economics of dental practices. Sonendo is also the parent company of TDO® Software, the developer of widely used endodontic practice management software solutions, designed to simplify practice workflow. TDO Software integrates practice management, imaging, referral reporting and CBCT imaging, and offers built-in communication with the GentleWave System.
